Aug 16 Run: Waterfront for a still developing route

Meet at the big smoke stacks in the Long Horn Steakhouse parking lot at the Waterfront for a route that will include the Waterfront trail and perhaps a visit to Duck Hollow - if we can figure that out.

Today was Elaine's famous and fabulous Three Bridges, Three Rivers run. The air was heavy and hot but we slogged on buoyed by downtown vistas and interesting sights not to mention the 8th floor flasher in the Hilton Hotel! It was good to see that the riverfront trail is finally open in front of the Casino - which was fairly quiet even though today was its opening. Perhaps it was the sultry weather but we lingered for quite a while at the Coffee Tree or perhaps we were, as Paula the Brit might say, knackered! Still there is no cause for complaining since our summer has been so mild up until now.

Aug 9 Run: PPG Place for a Three Rivers Casino Run

Next Sunday the new casino opens on the North Shore. We will use this event to revisit the Three Rivers Downtown Run, Meet at PPG Place (glass buildings, fountain, Tomb of the Unknown Bowler) at 7:00. There is free metered parking around there on Sunday.

For those wanting to run to the run, meet at Phipps Conservatory ready to take off at 6:15 AM (as I recall it takes all of the 45 min to get downtown).

Paula the Brit summed up today's run for which I was not present (I only showed up for the coffee):
This is the route:
I'm sure someone more eloquent than I will comment on the route but I think we had 9 people, cool with a little rain but more humidity. Quiet, nice run. Saw a deer at Schenley Park bridge who didn't know quite what to make of us but clearly no threat. Talk of training for the 1/2M in November. Ran along Darlington to view rarely seen beautiful houses.
You and David Coulson joined us at Goat Coffee after. Over to you...

Reviews of the new coffee shop were mixed:
Plus: Lots of seating space with doors to the outside
Minus: Decaf coffee had lots of grounds at the bottom of the cup

Plus: Across from Allegro Hearth Bakery
Minus: A good walk from the usual bagel places - although Elaine was off to see if Kazantsky's had bagels

Aug 2 Run: New Coffee Shop - corner of Hobart and Murray

I am fairly sure it is a Crazy Mocha coffee shop at the corner of Hobart and Murray but their website does not list it yet. It will be obvious when you get there - it is on the same side of the street as the Allegro Hearth bakery - just across Hobart.

I was not on the run last Sunday but I heard that Pam Murray took everyone on some little know paths through Frick Park. While it was longish every one enjoyed it - particularly the little path by the stream.

July 26 Run: Colfax School for Frick Park/9 Mile Run run

Hi All
Meet at Colfax School where hopefully someone will lead a run through Frick Park and 9 Mile Run (it was unclear if there was an owner as everyone hurried out of the Coffee Tree).

A large crowd (well, more than 10 people, including several new members) showed up for a run that touched on the Vintage Grand Prix course and then took us on the traditional Wendy Bennett Trail. We only got a few stern warnings about being on the race course and spent most of our time on the much quieter trails in Schenley Park. Today was just another in a long string of cool and sunny mornings, leading us to wonder if perhaps we had actually transported to another city and did not know it. Chris, Pam's husband, astutely recognized that the purpose of the run was not really exercise but the coffee chat afterwards.

Jul 19 Run:Hobart and Leath for a Vintage Grand Prix run

Meet at Hobart and Leath way (near Schenley Park) for a tour of the Vintage Grand Prix course.

As I was running the Austin Lake trail last week, I do not have a description of last Sunday's run but I am sure it was enjoyable, as always.

July 3rd and 5th Runs: Coffee Tree

Next week being a holiday weekend many of us (myself included) will be running in other venues. We did not choose a place this morning after the run so I am going with the old faithful Coffee Tree meeting place and let whoever shows up choose the run. 7 AM as always.

I am guessing Tom may still be out there at 5:45 AM on Friday but for others who have the day off, how about meeting at 7:30 AM (a little sleep in) on July 3rd at the Coffee Tree?

Even though Joanne is taking a break from running to rest some nagging injuries, the rest of us finally managed to find our way to her run, enjoying the colorful gardens and houses of Highland Park along the way. The Park itself is a different place with all the summer overgrowth crowding the trails. The group split up at the end some going back to Squirrel Hill and Pam and I staying at Tazza D'Oro. We were joined by Joanne for one of their tasty Cinnamon rolls and some very good coffee.

June 28 Run: Highland Park, Tazza D'Oro Coffee Shop

Meet at Tazza D'Oro Coffee Shop near the corner of Highland Ave and Bryant St. for a Highland Park run. Either we will run Joanne's Highland Park run or Pam Murray will help us find an Urban farm near-by.

Meet at Shady and Wilkins at 6:35 AM for a run to the run (it is about 2.5 miles).

I was still recovering from a hard day of rowing so did not go on the run this morning. I did however join the group for coffee and heard that they had a great tour of the grand houses in Friendship. Among other things they saw a very large marble front yard Buddha, new wave gardens and some of intriguing art shops that are popping up on Penn Ave.

June 21 Run: Rite Aid at the corner of Roup/Negley and Baum Blvd

Cheryl will take us on a run through the picturesque homes of Friendship next Sunday. Meet at the Rite Aid on the corner of Roup, Negley and Baum Blvd.

There will be a run to the run starting at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill at 6:35 AM (according to Google maps it is 1.7 miles).

Is it my imagination, but has this been a particularly lovely spring in Pittsburgh? Sure we have had some gray and rainy days during the week but it seems every Sunday morning has been cool, clear, and sunny - perfect running weather. Today Teri led us through the ups and downs of our own Frick Park, which was looking particularly nice in all its summer greenery. As an extra bonus we stopped to browse through a yard/house sale on our way back to her house (we missed you Wendy!).

As often is the case it was the after run activity that was the highlight of the run (for me at least). Today Teri hosted a book exchange/ breakfast at her house. As you might expect, our group members are eclectic readers with fine taste in books. We all left with big stacks of interesting books and agreed that we will have to do this regular intervals so we can reshuffle the books among ourselves. After book browsing we sat on Teri's pleasant back deck, sipping coffee, eating treats and sharing vacation plans - some of which are very ambitious.

June 14 Run: Teri's house for a book exchange

Teri Malmstrom is hosting a combined run and book exchange (we exchange books after the run :-) this coming Sunday which also happens to be Flag day. Bring books you are ready to retire and find others to read. Teri kindly offered her porch, if people want to drop books off the night before and not carry them while running to the run.

Teri lives on the Severn Street in the 1400 block of Severn St - the end closer to Wilkins on the right hand side as you face away from Wilkins. The house is trimmed in pink and has a lot of flowers on the porch. I confess she gave me her house number earlier today but I am uncertain I am remembering the final two digits correctly - I am sure she will send out the correct address sometime this week.

Many people ran from the Coffee Tree to the Hot Metal bridge this morning for I admit, one of my favorite runs along the Monongahela River past UPMC Sports Medicine toward Sand Castle. It is a flat out and back course and right now a screen of trees obscures the river, but the sound of the birds, the glimpses of the River and the forested hills on the other side give it a little bit of a rural feel - a pleasant break from our city streets.

We saw a tow boat and its barges on the river and there was some discussion about if it was a big tow or not: it was 3 barges wide and two long. My husband, former barge hand, says that this is the maximum size for the Mon where the lock chambers are 600ft. On the Ohio, where lock chambers are 1200 fit, the tow can be 5 barges long. On the Mississippi, were there are no locks the tow can be 10 - 12 barges long - but never more than 3 across.

Practically everyone came back to the Coffee Tree and consequently took over the front part. The new windows were open making for a very pleasant indoor/outdoor experience.

June 7 Run: Hot Metal Bridge for a south side trail run

We will meet at the usual parking lot to the right of the Hot Metal Bridge on the 2nd Avenue side and then run on the lovely bike path toward Sand Castle. Hopefully the string of beautiful weather will continue.

Note that there will be a run to the run starting from the Coffee Tree at 6:30 AM.
Please respond to this note if you are going to drive to the run and would be willing to leave from the Coffee Tree at 6:45AM or conversely if you want a ride to the run.

The slight cooling trend made it just the right temperature to run through Frick Park on this sunny morning. Even though Julie was not there there were enough people who knew how to get us in and out of the park without getting lost. We agreed that this is a wonderful time of year in Pittsburgh with all the green and none of the dustiness that comes later in the summer.

Talk over coffee was all about the coming G-20 conference. We thought perhaps we might invite Michelle Obama to run with us - or at least join us for coffee :-)

May 31st Run: Colfax School

There is no leader for this coming Sunday's run but either a) Julie will turn up or b) we will run through Frick Park and hopefully end up back at Colfax School.

It was one of those hot/humid/hazy Pittsburgh mornings but Tom lead a lively (well talkative) group on a mixed up version of a regular run through CMU and Schenley Park. At least the park was shady and green so it gave the illusion of being cool. An added bonus was the re-appearance of Sharon Riddler.
While the run was certainly picturesque the best part of the morning, for me at least, was the leisurely visit over coffee at the end. Sitting outside in the sun on a holiday weekend, talking about everything and more, is a true harbinger of summer vacations (of which I know some of you are on). So while we may not be at the beach or in Paris, we made our own little place or rest and renewal.

May 24 Run: Tom's House - Memorial Day @ Coffee Tree

Next up:  Tom will lead next Sunday from his house, 5434 Aylesboro, to who knows where?  Also, there will be the usual pick-up holiday run on Memorial Day, at 7 at the Coffee Tree.

Unexpectedly cool but perfect running weather took us on the new Squirrel Hill run fashioned by Paula the Brit last week, a Run with a View certain to be repeated, although this time, no giant cow!
http://icecreamjournal.turkeyhill.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/giant-cow-driving.jpg

CTR (evidently the moniker for Coffee Tree Roasters, seen on a poster for their pet biking group - what about us?!) conversation centered on runs, past, present and future, our new expertise on washing machines, and the Great Julia Child.  We speculated on a run in the near future that incorporates some form of public transportation.

May 17 Run: Coffee Tree - Yes Again!

Since the last two weeks have been out of the ordinary, we will meet at the Coffee Tree in Squill one more time to get back on track.

Some accident of time and space prevented me from meeting up with the few runners that showed up for the run this morning. We all were at the Coffee Tree at what we thought was 7AM but we somehow missed each other, although we found each other at the end of our runs. Despite the separate runs we, and I am sure all of you running the Race for the Cure, enjoyed this picture post card morning: it was cool, clear and sunny, the trees were bright green, the flowering bushes vibrant - we could not have asked for a prettier day.

I ran through the cemetery and reflected on motherhood, mothers here and those who have died (not surprisingly as I was running in a cemetery). I thought about how we all mother through being mentors, managers, teachers, gardeners, pet owners, doctors, coaches - all those activities involving nurturing. So Happy Mothers Day to all of you!

May 10 Run: Coffee Tree in Squill again

Next Sunday is Mother's Day and the Race for the cure (http://www.pittsburghraceforthecure.org/). If you are not running in the race, going out for brunch or having breakfast in bed, there will be a "pick-up" run from the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill at 7 AM as usual.

A big shout out to all EE Runners and friends who participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon and 1/2 Marathon - as well to everyone who recently completed 1/2 marathons in other places.

Plus a big hug to Chaton who is recovering from a rough round of illness!!

Three of us showed up this morning, ensuring the tradition of Sunday runs was not broken. Although there only a few of us, we managed to cash in on some of the marathon good-will by running a small portion of the course here in the East End. The streets were already closed providing us the rare opportunity of running down the very middle of 5th avenue. People setting up aid stations and getting ready for registered runners were quite happy to give us a round of applause as we blazed by (well - at least we were running). As we ran we relived our marathons of years past and imagined having to run another 10 miles from where we were (not so easy any more).

May 3 Run: Coffee Tree Squirrel Hill

In order to avoid getting entangled in potential Marathon related traffic/road blocks etc. we will do an impromptu 'hood run starting from the Coffee Tree. We will also send a blast of psychic support to those in the group running the 1/2 and full marathon - Go EE Runners!!!

Janet Catov and her cute as a button dog, Willie, joined us this morning as our celebrity alumni runner; plus injured but getting better regular,  Sharon Riddler, joined us for coffee - these visits along with the almost summer weather lent a holiday-like atmosphere to today's run. Karen led us through Frick Park, a great choice because I don't think you can get enough of the parks during this bright green season. As Jonathan aptly commented we are coming to the end of the "see-through" season  and right now we are at the magical in-between point as the trees form a lacy backdrop to the surrounding hillsides.

Even coffee was special today, as we were able to sit outside for the first time in a long while.

Apr 26 Run: Reynolds Ave. Entrance to Frick Park

Hi All
Karen will lead us on a run through Frick Park and Nine-mile run this coming Sunday. It will be a good chance to see this lovely area dressed for Spring. Meet at the Reynolds Ave, Entrance to Frick (at the traffic circle).

Tom named today's run: Palumbo to Palumbo and it was a doozy. We ran from Oakland to the Palumbo Center at Duquesne then back to the Palumbo building at Carlow. In between we saw all sorts of interesting, provocative and amazing building/street art. Someone has been painting vibrant murals in uptown, which along with the seeding of some vacant lots is making that area seem less seedy ;-) One theme was definitely animals - we saw a chicken on a mural; parrots, dogs and a turtle(!) in a scupltural mural on the side DU Palumbo center, rabbit sculptures peaking from a backyard, a large monkey face on the side of a house and eagles on the new bridge over Forbes. We also got a ground level view of the new and imposing hockey arena. Again, we were all surprised by what we saw as we ran through the uptown neighborhood - Pittsburgh has so many of these hidden gems.

Our coffee meetings are getting so popular we are now attracting non-runners!

Apr 19 Run: University of Pittsburgh Law School

Although Tom was not on the run today, I understand he volunteered for the run this coming Sunday. It will start from Pitt's Law School which according to Google Maps is at 3900 Forbes Ave, near the intersection of Bouquet Street.

If people would like to run to the run, it is a little over two miles from the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill so meet at 6:35 AM (the route is Forbes, through the golf course, behind Hillman Library and up Bouquet St).

Although it was a small group of holiday runners we gladly followed Paula as she led us through what seemed to be every corner of Squirrel Hill in search of Spring flowers. We saw many on this glorious Easter day - perfect spring weather and a lovely run.
I am cutting this short because it is just too pretty to be spending any more time in front of the computer!

Apr 12 Run: Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill

[Thanks to Roye Werner for this wonderful account]

Despite a modest but energetic turnout (6) much to report today!

First, plans for upcoming runs:  next Sunday, due to the Easter holiday and the fact that apparently none of today's runners will be around, it's an ad hoc run to start at Coffee Tree.  The following Sunday, Tom will lead from the Pitt law school, and was characteristically enigmatic as to the details.  And weekday runners, please note a new and unique opportunity this coming Wednesday!  We discovered that on this day at sunrise, to mark a once-every-28-years ancient Jewish belief about special sun alignment, some sort of ceremony will happen at Blue Slide Park (on Beechwood.)  So there will be the option of leaving from the usual 5:45 Forbes/Murray meetup and going in the other direction to get to the park at around sunrise (well, a little early.)  To be ecumenical, yoga sun salutations will be involved, and anything else you like.

Today, Tom's excellent run in the bright brisk weather went through the Heart of Oakland, where we puzzled over the giant mural of Mr. Rogers and other odd things in a sea of red, white and blue bubbles, and reminisced about The Decade and missing the Sex Pistols.  Discussion topics later, as always, were effervescent:  the recommended Bavarian Inn in WV, the NOT recommended Japanese restaurant at the Waterfront, matzos, AK-47's, hot cross buns, texting chacha, the above sun worship plan for Wednesday, visa issues for P. the B., and finally, a possible solution for that having to do with a 1000-year old Mayan prediction - for which amazing story, see:
http://www.pointoflight.com/htmlpages/PghMaya.html (questionable version)
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08174/891772-52.stm (more reasonable version)
Much going on in the cosmos, as you see.

Apr 5th Run: Tom's House

Thanks to Paula Clemens for the update and to Tom for leading the first run in April!

Anne Jane,

Tom will take the run next week from his house, 5434 Aylesboro. We did the bird run through Squirrel Hill this morning. For the record, it wasn't raining, just in case anyone might ask. Everyone managed to stay in remarkably good spirits even though it wasn't raining. If you don't believe me, ask Tom.

Mar 29 Run: Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill

Since those of us remaining after today's run will not be in Pittsburgh next Sunday, for simplicity's sake we decided that the run would begin at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill. Whoever shows up can choose the route.

Today's run was covered new territory for the group and is definitely on the list for repeat performances. Pam Murray lead us up (and I do mean up!) the Southside slopes to Arlington - another Pittsburgh high point. The views were stunning - you could see the Point, the buildings downtown, the bridges up the Monongahela River, Oakland and much more. And as if the views were not enough, the streets themselves, all narrow with houses and churches hanging off the hills, provided constant visual interest. San Francisco kept coming up in our conversations. But it was a truly Pittsburgh set of steps that took us from the top of the slopes down to the bottom, past more tiny houses and even some undeveloped open space. Once again, I am amazed how much variety our city has to offer.

A few of us had our post-run coffee at Big Dog Coffee on Sarah Street near the Southside works. If you happen to be in the area you should definitely stop by this cozy hangout which also happens to have great coffee.

Mar 22 Run: Hot Metal Bridge

Next run - Pam will lead from the Hot Metal Bridge - the usual parking lot to the right of it on the 2nd Avenue side.  I can't remember quite where it's going: Pam will fill us in.  (And the run after that - we're trying to come up with another Lawrenceville run that does not involve soggy freezing shoes and that may get a photo of us in front of the giant Iron City sign.)
Note that there will be a run to the run starting from the Coffee Tree at 6:30 AM and those who want a ride be at the same place at 6:45 AM

We had cool dry weather for our run today, in which Virginia led us past real crocuses and unreal electric daffodils in Oakland and Shadyside, on nice level ground until we hit the Chatham campus and needed to make our way back up.  At that point, we needed to find a good conversation topic to keep our minds off the hill; one of which was the contents of this article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/15/fashion/15commune.html - and we wondered if they were going to open a branch in Pittsburgh, and if so, if Steelers garb would be involved.

The usual fun conversation at the Coffee Tree (getting renovated just in time for our springtime visits) revolved around condos we would love to live in, whether we should revive mah jongg, and the fabulous Triangle Bar in Swissvale, among other things.

Mar 15 run: Coffee Tree for a run in Oakland

Just to make the email predictable to find:
I'm happy to lead the run this Sunday, March 15. Meet at the coffee tree. We'll run down Forbes thru the Schenley golf course and around the Cathedral of Learning and thru Shadyside and back thru Chatham campus to Squirrel Hill. Another trainer for those interested in the half marathon. -- Virginia

Thanks Virginia!

I  may not be there - if I am not please let me know where the following week's run will be.

On Sun, Mar 8, 2009 at 11:55 AM, Anne Jane Gray <annejane@gmail.com> wrote:
Perhaps we were dazzled by Pam's run or just wiped out but we neglected to pick a run for next week. Any ideas?

Pam's "Stacks and Tracks" run took us through Schenley Park, the bottom of Oakland, and a veranda with an unexpected view of Panther Hollow. Despite the Daylight Savings Time darkness and the overcast skies the run kept us interested as we explored parts of our neighborhood that we have not visited in a while.  Here are the "Stacks and Tracks" we visited:
  • The brand new track at Schenley Oval - which we ran around a few times to give the sky time to lighten up
  • The rail road tracks that run through and above Panther Hollow
  • The big steam stacks by Carnegie Library
  • As well as the stacks in Carnegie Library
  • While not stacks or tracks, the very long staircase up from Panther Hollow to the back of the Frick Art Building deserves a mention
  • A view of the steam stacks from the formerly mentioned veranda around one of those CMU buildings overlooking Panther Hollow - we marveled that only an engineering college would fill glass walled rooms  with dusty old electronic equipment and a heating plant (in fairness there was a fancy meeting room and a class room too)
  • The stacks in the CMU library - running nearby brought up the sad tale of a former member's dog as well as a not verified fact that Alcoa (who donated the library) specified that nothing could be built to obscure it from US Steel workers driving on Forbes Ave
  • And finally the CMU track!

And if that were not enough for one day over coffee we also devised a great way to use Facebook to enhance the profile of those people (namely me) who might be being investigated by future employers.

Mar 8 Run: Wendy Bennett Trailhead for a Tracks and Stacks run

Pam Murray is keeping us guessing about her Tracks and Stacks run - meet at the Wendy Bennett Trailhead  (Overlook Drive entrance to Schenley Park) next Sunday to find out where it goes. Remember that next Sunday is the start of day-light savings time and we loose an hour of sleep - move your clocks forward 1 hour.

I learned a tough lesson this morning as I waited forlornly for a ride to the run that never appeared. I am just glad it was me and not a new member! From now on if I advertise a ride to the run, I will be sure that there are people who will be available to provide that service. Roye, who also missed the run, were still welcomed at coffee afterwards.

I am sure the South Side run was great. Paula the Brit provided the following link to a map of the run:
Paula Leslie writes:
This morning\'s basic route. Then add on whatever bits people did. This undermeasures because of the straightlines so maybe we did do 5.5plus R2R. PtB

To view Hot Metal to Smithfield & back, follow the link below:
http://www.mapmyrun.com/view_route?r=363220385916

I also re-drew the run to the run via Bates street to the Boulevard it at was actually 2.5 miles - not 2.9.

Mar 1 Run: Hot Metal Bridge for a longer Jail Trail/South Side run

Hi All
For the first day of March we are going to try a longer run to help those training for the Pittsburgh 1/2 Marathon. The run is about 6 - 7 miles but with options to make the run shorter for those who don't want to go the whole way. We will follow the jail trail to the Smithfield Street Bridge then pick up the South Side trail back to the Hot Metal Bridge.

We will meet at the parking lot right next to the Hot Metal Bridge on 2nd Avenue. This is the same parking lot we've met at before to do South Side runs -- it is on the Oakland side of the Hot Metal Bridge, not the South Side Works side; Drive down Bates to 2nd Ave., turn right and take the first entrance into the parking lot and swing left to park near the bridge. There is a ramp from this parking lot that will connect us to the Jail Trail.

For those wanting even more miles, meet at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill at 6:35 a.m. for the run to the run. It is a 2.9 mile run from there.

If you would like to get a ride to the run, meet at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill at 6:45 a.m.  I am assuming a few people will turn up with cars.

Although the roads were "slippy" this morning, the trails in Schenley park surprisingly, were not. It was a steely gray winter run through the park,  which does have a certain stark kind of beauty at this time of year. While the run was pleasant enough, it was the rambunctious discussion over coffee that made getting out in the biting cold worth it.

I promise I will send a note about the Pittsburgh Marathon options this week!

Feb 22 Run; Wendy Bennett Trailhead

Thanks to Paul C (the brain) for the excellent report from this past Sunday's run. Funnily enough (well to me anyway) the last time the announced run was on the Wendy Bennett Trail, Paula was the back-up recorder.... we will see if a pattern emerges.

Next Sunday the run will begin at the Wendy Bennett Trailhead (Overlook Drive entrance to Schenley Park). We will take advantage of the 7am light skies before we lose them to daylight savings time. Meet at the Coffee Tree at 6:45 AM to run there (it is 1 mile).

Report on last Sunday's run in Highland Park: Despite the absence of an announcement of a run-to-the-run, a few creatures of habit showed up at the usual place at the usual time anyway to enjoy the pre-run. Impressively, Cheryl, arriving late, successfully intercepted the run-to-the-run and ran most of it. Deftly brought out by Anne Jane's email the week before, Joanne led a delightful run through Highland Park. During coffee at Tazo D'Oro after the run we learned yet another talent of Molly's - playing the fiddle. Better yet, we learned that the group she plays with will play at Murphy's Grill at Forbes and Braddock on March 14th 'all evening' (more precise times may be forthcoming). However, the report that Murphy's allows smoking was met with a spontaneous group groan.

Paula

While you were enjoying the charms of Highland Park, Dave and I slipped into the back of the pack in the Austin Marathon. We took guilty pleasure in the cheers and the many bands along the part of the route we ran. This reminded me that I have been remiss in finding out the details about teams and relays for our own Pittsburgh Marathon and will do that soon.

Feb 15 Run: Tazza D'Oro for a Highland Park Run

Meet at Tazza D'Oro Coffee Shop near the corner of Highland Ave and Bryant St. for a Highland Park run. We are hoping Joanne can lead the group but if not I am sure it will be interesting!

It was an "R" run through North Point Breeze this morning:
Reunion - to everyone's delight, long-time but busy member, Julie Meder, joined us for the run and coffee

Relief - it was a relief not to have to wear your whole closet full of running clothes on this almost warm morning - some people, besides Tom, even wore shorts!

Recycle - we observed those big recycling bins at Construction Junction

Resolve - Pam Murray showed us where to go in case of a mental health emergency :
http://www.upmc.com/Services/resolvecrisisnetwork/Pages/default.aspx - it is tucked away just a block from the Food Co-op

Revealing - Pam Murray stumped Tom with this historical fact - the bathrooms in Westinghouse park are all that is left of the former Westinghouse Mansion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westinghouse_Park

gRowlers - (OK that is a stretch) - once again we checked out the incredibly hard to find East End Brewing Company: http://mail.google.com/mail/?zx=16jsa3uqq3s6j&shva=1#compose

Renewable - we saw a car powered by vegetable oil

Relay - we are thinking of putting together at least one relay team for the Pittsburgh Marathon. There are already a few people who have committed to running the 1/2 Marathon

Restorative - as always the run and the discussion over coffee provide a much welcomed lift of the spirits not to mention some very interesting ideas for unusual jobs

Feb 8 run: Linden School for a Point Breeze (North and South) run

I knew it was going to be a good run when more than 7 cars were waiting in the Strip District parking lot as we pulled in. Even the North Hills branch of the running group was there and most everyone was decked out in their black and gold for this Super Bowl inspired run. Despite Roye and Wendy falling on ice just as we were starting out, we continued on through slush, pot holes and more icy patches to view the city decked out for their beloved Steelers. Highlights included the Terrible Tree, Heinz field, sea gulls watching us from their floating ice blocks, a very large sculpture composed of replicas of Pittsburgh bridges, the city painted gold by the morning sun (finally some sun!) and the strip merchandise vendors already setting up their tables at 8AM! Plus there was the added uplift of people cheering us as we ran by: "Go Steelers!!" Roye chronicled this memorable run and will post the photos on the group's facebook page (a hot topic of conversation).
It was also decided that standing while drinking coffee at LaPrima was perfectly fine - particularly while eating those melt-in-your-mouth pastries from Enricos.

Feb 1 Run: 21rst and Liberty for a downtown Steeler Mania Run

To celebrate Superbowl Sunday we are going to run through Steeler vendor central in the strip, visit various displays of Steeler enthusiasm downtown, and take a trip around Heinz Field before returning to La Prima for coffee. Note that this is about a 5.5 mile run - a little longer than some, if time makes a difference. Wear your Steelers colors!!

We will meet at the parking lot at 21rst and Liberty (I think there is a sign that says Liberty Commons).
It is on the side of Liberty away from the river - turn left at the light at 21st street, if you are going into town. There will be cars leaving the Coffee Tree for the meeting place at 6:35 AM.

This was a "Tom in tights" run - so you know it was chilly but we must be getting used to it since a fair number of people turned up. We speculated on the cost of some very nice houses for sale as we ran through Shadyside, Pittsburgh's version urban quaint. The run was also an opportunity to discuss the virtues of various cold-weather gear, the Israel/Gazza conflict and our Inauguration experiences. It is hard to wax poetic about Pittsburgh in the dead of winter, between pot holes, dirty cars and a general feeling of wear. Still the early morning sky was that clear blue/violet for a while proving that there was some beauty to be found in the bleak cityscape.

Jan 25 Run: Playground at 5th and Beechwood and a MLK Holiday Run

Flat run next week through Shadyside led by Virginia. Meet at the playground where Beechwood ends at 5th Ave.(I think this is Mellon Park but am not sure).

In celebration of this particularly meaningful MLK holiday and hopefully the Steeler win, there will be run starting at the Coffee Tree at 7:30 AM tomorrow (Jan 19).

Roye and I were not visualizing snow, slush and clouds when we thought up the Lovely Lawrenceville run but that is what we got. Still the state seals were worth the effort as was the site of the city waking up in a gray/rose/misty dawn. Although I have quickly passed through Lawrenceville, I had not realized how nice it was these days. The streets looked very quaint through the curtain of snow that fell of and on through the run. The Stephen Foster House (not really where he lived but it is where Roye's daughter lived) looked just like the set of the Nutcracker. The run to the run was tiring in the conditions but very promising. It is definitely a run to re-visit.

We had a particularly spirited coffee discussion today covering Facebook (ask to join the EE Runners group!) and internet privacy. And if I missed anything it is because I am still tired from that run :-)

Jan 18 Run: 40th & Butler Sts for a tour of Lawrenceville - rides available from the Coffee Tree

All
In honor of the upcoming inauguration, there will be an inaugural run across the 40th st bridge to see the state seals, then a tour of trendy Lawrenceville - don't miss this one! We will start from the Rite-Aid parking lot at the NW corner of the intersection of 40th and Butler Streets: (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Butler+St+%26+40th+St,+Pittsburgh,+Allegheny,+Pennsylvania+15201&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=27.366321,52.03125&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FdyAaQIdI987-w&ll=40.470212,-79.962337&spn=0.006399,0.012703&z=16&g=Butler+St+%26+40th+St,+Pittsburgh,+Allegheny,+Pennsylvania+15201&iwloc=addr)

Carpools will leave from the Squill Coffee Tree at 6:20 AM. Please send a note if you need a ride or can provide a ride.

Lawrenceville does have coffee places but Dozens, Coca Cafe and Crazy Mocha, all of which are close to the starting point do not open to 9AM or later (those Lawrencevillers must be lazy slugs). I will keep looking....

Roye was sure no one would show up on such a cold and icy morning. Demonstrating that we are tougher than that, 15 people decided it was a good morning for a run. Although there were definitely slippy spots, the footing was not as bad as imagined and perhaps energized by crisp air, the group mood was upbeat. The streets were quiet and the snowy landscape was a calm antidote the busy holiday season just ended.

For those that are on Facebook, I created a Facebook group for East End Runners (first a blog, now this!). If you would like to be a part of this (we are not yet sure what to do with the group), ask me to be your friend and I will sign you up.

Jan 11 Run: entrance to Frick Park, S. Homewood and Dallas

This coming Sunday, Roye will lead us on a run around the "edges" of Frick Park, giving us time to create a 40th street bridge/Lawrenceville run for Inaguration weekend.

Climbing up to Robert E Williams Park was a good run to start 2009. From that high point Pittsburgh glitters in the blue morning mist and all dreams seem possible. This is a park to show visitors or even long time residents our beautiful city from a new perspective.
Roye came prepared with a map and led us on a new way down from Herron Hill. We threaded our way past Falk School, Paula's parking garage and lab and hidden parts of Oakland back to Phipps. We regrouped at the Coffee Tree for another boistrous round of conversations.

Jan 4 run: Phipps for a run to the top of Oakland and more holiday runs

I really meant to run with the group this morning but overslept! My husband and I had a blustery run along the North Shore instead but no inflatables.

Pam Murray sent a note to say that next Sunday's run will go to Herron Hill which I think is where the water tower sits in Robert E Williams Park. If this is correct, then last time we ran this (Aug 17) we met at Phipps.
A run to the run will leave the Coffee Tree at 6:45AM.

In addition to the usual 5:45 AM Forbes/Murray runs there will be alternates on Wednesday and Friday starting at 7AM from the Coffee Tree.
There will be a 7:30 AM New Years Day run starting at the Coffee Tree (start 2009 off right!)

And finally Pam sent along the information below about Canaan Valley, WV

Dec 27 Run: Tom's House and Holiday Runs

Tom will take the run again this coming Sunday, Dec 7. Meet at his house on Ayelsboro, contract in hand.

Holiday Runs
Wed, Dec 24 5:45 AM Forbes and Murray (usual Wed run)
Thu, Dec 25 7:30 AM Coffee Tree, which may not be open
Fri, Dec 26 5:45 AM Forbes and Murray (usual Fri run for those who have to work or like to get up early)
and 7:30 AM Coffee Tree - that is right two runs on the same day

Today's run was a big present full of notable events and sights. It started out with a drive to the run to the run, where four environmentally conscious drivers car-pooled down to the Hot Metal Bridge. We left the warm car and joined our new North Hills member, Carol, for a dark and windy run down the jail trail, arriving just in time to meet up with the group for Tom's famous, non-controversial Holiday Run. This included
  • A stunning view of our rivers, the tree at the Point and the very tiny wreath on the stadium
  • Cannons at the Fort Pitt History Museum (have we seen cannons before?)
  • The Horne's/ Highmark Tree as well as an equally sparkly tree in the building across Stanwix Street
  • Tom's place of work, dressed up for the holiday
  • The tree at the hotel near the Convention Center which keeps changing hands so I don't remember its name
  • The hallucinatory color display on the new bus terminal
  • The creche on the US Steel Plaza, which we thought could benefit with the addition of a few wise runners
  • The wind music tunnel, a gracious gesture on Tom's part in deference to last year's run
  • The tree and Menorah at the City Building on Grant Street where Tom rescued a deer
  • The appearance of Chaton who had been trying to catch up with us
And if that was not enough there was drama at the Coffee Tree as Cheryl and Elaine worked out an elaborate scheme to retrieve Cheryl's car in which she had locked both her and Elaine's keys. The solution is too convoluted to report here but thanks to Virginia and Elaine's daughter, Beth all was made well.

Dec. 20 annual Downtown holiday run/PPG Plaza

All
Thanks to Virginia for her wonderful notes on the upcoming and Sunday run!
Note that the Holiday run starts at the ice rink/big tree on PPG Plaza at 7AM as usual. There is plenty of free on-street parking at that time of day for those who would prefer not to run to the run.

Anne Jane

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Anne Jane --

Tom will lead his annual Downtown holiday run on Sunday, Dec. 20. A caveat on this one: At the end of this morning's run, Tom handed out a "contract" that requires next week's participants to "respect the run" (meaning, no side trips or requests for side trips) and that runners not discuss or compare next week's route with previous Downtown holiday runs and that participants would run cheerfully along the route  (no grumbling about not being able to take side trips or that this is not the way we went before, etc. etc.......) A couple of the eight runners who showed up for this morning's run "signed" the contract with their muddy sneakerprints and others said they would take the contract home for review.

Anyway, there was interest in creating a run to next week's run so read these instructions carefully. If you would like to get a ride to the run to the run, meet at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill at 6:20 a.m.  The run to the run begins at 6:30 in the parking lot right next to the Hot Metal Bridge on 2nd Avenue. (This is the same parking lot we've met at before to do South Side runs -- it is on the Oakland side of the Hot Metal Bridge over the Mon, not the South Side Works side; Drive down Bates to 2nd Ave., turn right and take the first entrance into the parking lot and swing left to park near the bridge) There is a ramp from this parking lot that will connect us to the Jail Trail.

This morning Elaine led us from the Coffee Tree along the Bob O'Connor memorial route, which in the opposite direction is known as the bird route because of live birds that used to be in the window of a Morrowfield Street shop (maybe 10 years ago). The group suggestion that perhaps we can add a description on our blog about how each of the participants in the running group came to part of this wonderful Sunday morning ritual. We ran by Cheryl's childhood home on Beechwood which sparked a lively discussion about our bedroom decor when we were all growing up which for some included orange or pink shag carpet and posters of the Monkees.

Dec 14 Run: Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill

After today's inventive run we decided to take a break on creativity and meet at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill. Route will be decided by whoever shows up. I will be in Austin and would appreciate it if someone would email me the location of the following Sunday run.

It was a testament to the promise of a new run from Cheryl (or perhaps the coffee afterward) that 11 people showed up on this blustery and snowy morning. Although the run was made slightly shorter at the request of chilly participants, we toured a wide variety of neighboorhood schools, dropping off runners as we veered by their houses. I think the final total was 7 schools: Sterret, Linden, Children's Institute, Whightman, St. Bede's, New Church School, Shadyside Academy. Five of us stuck it out to the end and were rewarded with scones, nutbread, muffins, fruit, coffee and as always, lively conversation in Cheryl's cozy kitchen. While the streets were snow covered and the wind chill was noticiable, it was a run to remind us that once out there, it is not as bad as imagined and can even provide unexpected pleasures.

Dec 7: 121 Richland Lane

The first run in December will be an early holiday present in the form of a themed run, followed by coffee at Cheryl's home at 121 Richland Lane. If you are not sure where that is, click here for what I hope is a map of the house. Cheryl suggests that you park in the Factory (building where the East End Food Co-op is located at the corner of Penn and Braddock) parking lot and walk over. Her home is up the street on the left, next to the apartment complex, before you reach Tuscarora. There is no parking on Richland and very limited parking on Tuscarora. For those running from the East End you can run down Reynolds to Ben Hur, turn left at the fence, traverse over a short unpaved path and you will be at the other end of Richland Lane.

Our running group luck held and although it was cloudy there was no rain for a run through Oakland lead by Tom. The highlight was a stop at the newly renovated Schenley Plaza fountain (http://www.popcitymedia.com/developmentnews/schftn1015.aspx), another turtle adorned sculpture (the other being the Westinghouse Memorial by the CMU campus). We also tried out the "new trail" up the bank of Serpentine Road. It was a comfort run for the last day of November 2008.

2008 Thanksgiving Week Runs

Hi All
Here is the run schedule for the upcoming holiday week:
Wed, Nov 26: 5:45 AM at Forbes and Murray as usual

Thu, Nov 27: 7:30 AM at Coffee Tree in Squill - Virginia will lead a 4 - 5 mile run through Oakland and back

Fri, Nov 28: 5:45 AM at Forbes and Murray as usual - Tom said he would be there

Sun, Nov 30: 7:00 AM at Tom's house - 5343 Ayelsboro

A surprising number of hardy soles turned up for a chilly winter-like run through Schenley Park. With clear blue skies, snow on the ground and bare trees it felt more like January than late November. Still it had its beauties such as the the glimpse of the rosy rising sun on the spare Oakland skyline.
Discussion subjects at coffee roamed far into our pasts (growing sprouts and other herbal treats) as we sought solutions for the shaky economic crisis.

Nov 23 Run: Wendy Bennett Trailhead

Next week's run will start at the Wendy Bennett trailhead for a Schenley park run, with hopes of still enjoying some morning light. Meet at the Coffee Tree at 6:45 AM to run to there (it is 1 mile).

Thanks to Paula Clemmens for her report on last Sunday's run:
We had a very nice run this am. The temperature was perfect. It was much nicer than later in the day. Virginia led us through a fascinating tour of Edgewood. For future information, the needed allotted time to run from Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill to the tennis courts on Braddock is 15 minutes. The run-to the run runners had extra time before the official run which we spent showing the wall art map in Regent Square to Molly.

And a big thank-you to everyone who sent recommendations for eye doctors. Now I just have to pick one from the many. I will add the names to the list of runner recommendations that you can find on the right-hand side of our blog http://eastendrunners.blogspot.com/  when I have the chance.

Nov 16 Run: Tennis Courts on Braddock Ave

Virginia will lead a run starting at the tennis courts on Braddock Ave this coming Sunday. I imagine people may also be up for a run to the run? I won't be here but I suggest starting at the Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill around 6:25 AM. It is about 1.5 miles to the tennis courts.

The group continued the streak of record book runs this morning with 17 people showing up for a fall run/hike through obscure but lovely corners of Frick Park. Even under a gray ski with many bare trees there were enough splashes of color to evoke the beauty of this fleeting season. As if that were not enough, we ran on some lesser known streets in Squirrel Hill and all took a turn on the fast slide at the new Colfax playground - even Tom! We ended up in Pam and Chris's cozy kitchen for coffee, cake, cheese, fruit and of course stimulating conversation. If lives permitted, I think we might have stayed there all day!

Watch from some upcoming themed runs....

Nov 8 Run: Pam Murray's House - 2200 Beechwood Blvd

Pam Murray graciously offered to lead a run through Frick Park while we still have morning light and perhaps some fall color. In addition she has offered to host after-run coffee - what a deal! Pam lives at 2200 Beechwood Blvd - close to where Darlington comes into Beechwood, not far from Colfax School. She lives on the "up-side" of the street.

I was glad that we had a big group to re-visit the Strip/River run a few of us did a while ago because it certainly is one of the classics. It showcases so many of Pittsburgh's appealing features: interesting new housing (the Cork Factory), emerging and established tree-lined river paths, the serene river itself, the bridges and skyline, hidden water features (the Convention center) and ending with wonderful coffee and pastries at a Pittsburgh institution complete with men with Italian accents. All of this on a cool Fall morning - what could be better?!

Nov 2: Run through the Strip - 21st and Liberty

I heard from two people that it was decided to do a run through the strip. I assume we will meet at the parking lot at 21st and Liberty Ave. The lot is on the side of Liberty away from the river - turn left at the light at 21st st, if you are going into town. Last time we ran through the strip, across the 31st st bridge, along the path to the 9th st bridge and then back, which was a nice flat run.

La Prima opens at 8AM on Sunday so we might want to make our run a little longer :-) For those who did not run last time, the pastries and coffee were scrumptious.

Paula Clemens sent this note:
PS. Last Sunday's run was great. The run-to-the-run through a now greatly expanded Somerset development was well attended. We saw the day dawn over the river by the Waterfront and out-paced a barge.

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Oct 26 Run: Waterfront Run - flat and fabulous

Elaine Mormer is back! and she is leading a run on the Waterfront Trail this coming Sunday. Meet at the smokestacks by the Longhorn Steakhouse.Tom promises that he will drive down and so he can ferry at least some people back.

Elaine is also leading the run to the run: meet at the "J" corner (Phillips and Shady) at 6:25 AM. Google maps says it is 3.2 miles - I figure it will be shorter as you can cut through Somerset.

Today Karen lead us on another Fall Spectacular run through Frick Park. At one point we ran through a tunnel of gold leaves - truly a run for the season especially given the chilly clear air.

I won't be here next week so someone please let me know where the next run will be.

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Oct 19 run: Homewood Ave entrance to Frick Park - Fall Colors II

Continuing to enjoy the Fall colors in our own backyard, meet at the the Homewood Ave entrance to Frick Park (at the traffic circle) for a run through another of our beautiful neighborhood parks.

The Steve Faloon Trail provided a stunning view of the golden tree canopy in Schenley Park this morning. I felt like we were running in an Ansel Adams photograph seeing the various layers of trees and colors all around us. The temperature was perfect - cool but not cold and the sun was coming up - a great seasonal run.

Wednesday, October 08, 2008

Oct 13 Run: Wendy Bennett Trailhead - Fall colors

Meet at the Wendy Bennett Trailhead (corner of the Blvd and Bartlet St) for what could be a run through the fall colors.

I was not around this weekend but I am sure that the run on Sunday was a good one!

Designer Days Primer from Wendy Bennett

Now
Take a look through your closet and assess your needs. Figure out your
size. While you're at it, bag all the stuff you haven't worn in a year,
stuff that doesn't fit. Be brutal. Donate to a thrift store.

Before you go
Wear comfortable clothing w/o snaps and buttons for easy removal. Wear
underwear w/o holes. Eat something and grab a bottle of water. Pee.
Leave kids at home. Leave purse at home or locked in trunk of car.
Bring credit card.

You're there
Parking is easy. You should leave your coat, scarf, etc in car--you'll
need your hands free.
There are men's, women's and children's clothing categorized by type
(pantsuits, casual, overcoats, etc) plus shoes and accessories. Figure
out what you need the most and start looking.

Looking
Don't pull out every item. Better to let your eyes or fingertips scan
the fabric and pull out the most appealing colors and textures. If it
looks good, inspect quickly for stains and holes. Only get items in good
condition or capable of an easy repair. One of the great things about
Designer Days is that these are the creme-de-la-creme of the thriftstore
clothes so they are generally in great condition.

Trying on

Take your haul into the communal curtained room with horrible mirrors.
If you can, stand near someone your own size so you can inspect her
rejects. I've gotten some great stuff this way! Put all of your stuff on
a chair, and go for it. It is considered perfectly good manners to ask a
complete stranger how something looks. People from all over the city
have been coming to Designer Days for years and like me, look forward to
it. There are racks on casters for you to hang your own rejects. You can
buddy up with a friend or ask a guard in the dressing area to keep an
eye on your stuff while you go out and look for more great items.
Good luck!

Sep 28 Run: Pam's House or Coffee Tree (or both)

Next week is the Great Race and as is the tradition, Pam Murray graciously is hosting a pre-race gathering at her house at 2200 Beechwood - about 1/2 between the start line and Colfax school on the big bend. Arrive any time after 8 or 8:30 AM.

For those not running the Great Race meet at the Coffee Tree - perhaps we can snoop around the Great Race course and drop by Pam's house.

Tom lead us on a pleasant loop starting from his house. It was a coolish, dry and sunny, perfect for a run through Oakland and Schenley Park. But the highlight of the run was definitely the blueberry muffins made by Tom that were waiting for us at his house. They were a real surprise and treat!

Sep 21 Run: Tom's House

Tom valiantly volunteered to lead the run starting from his house on Aylesboro near the intersection of Forbes (the rest of us were to drippy with heat to come up with a good suggestion).

It was a hot and steamy run through Schenley Park this morning but there were also some good points: it was not rainy, there were quite a few runners, the water fountain near the visitors center was working (the button was noted) and as always the conversation was interesting when we stopped panting.

Sep 14 Run: Wendy Bennett Trailhead

Excellent reports from the two Paula's below. Note that the Wendy Bennett Trailhead is at the junction of Barlett and the Blvd of the Allies. Meet at the Coffee Tree at 6:45 AM to run to there (it is 1 mile). From Paula "the brain": We decided on a Wendy Bennett Trailhead run for next Sunday. The run in Highland Park was really nice. It was very peaceful through Highland Park and around the reservoir. We all enjoyed the lower levels of humidity for a change. Virginia educated us on the artist responsible for the water fountain with stylized dolphins.

From Paula "the Brit' (who is also a brain): Anne Jane - this is the route from last Sunday. And a jolly beautiful run it was too - particularly for Iain and I who'd never been to Highland Park. All mist and early morning sunshine. Then a very fine cup of coffee. Thanks again Joanne. PtB http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/pa/pittsburgh/441183776903

Sep 7 Run: Tazza D'Oro Highland Park

Thanks Joanne - we will take you up on that offer!
All meet at Tazza D'Oro Coffee Shop near the corner of Highland Ave and Bryant St. for an always interesting Highland Park run.

I will be at the Shaw Festival on Sunday but for those who want to run to the run, there is a note in the blog that says it takes 25 mins to run from Wilkins and Shady to Tazza D'Oro so meet at 6:30 - 6:35.

Paula The Brit's Brownie recipe and more!

For those of you that made it to Paula's house for her amazing after-run cake-fest (and for those of you who just love chocolate) here is a link to those brownies and even more.

thanks Paula!

I put the recipe on my family's recipe site. Started by my brother Damian. There might be other recipes on this site of interest to people. The "authors" (ha ha) are just normal people. Anyone can read the site and if someone wanted to join up I can get Damian to sort it. Sometimes we invent new recipes and sometimes just post stuff from a book.
P

Aug 31(at 7AM) and Labor Day (at 7:30 AM) runs: Coffee Tree

Because so many people will be out of town and those that will be here may be sleeping in, we decided that the Coffee Tree was the best option for this coming Sunday.

Labor Day there will also be a Coffee Tree run but because it is a holiday, after all, we will meet at 7:30 AM so everyone can sleep in for a 1/2 hour.

Runs will be created on the spot by whoever turns up.

Today's run in Allegheny Cemetery was as interesting as promised although so many of us ran to the ran that we short-changed everyone else by inadvertently keeping the run on the shorter side. Still we did see parts of this very large and verdant cemetery that we had not visited before. As always there was wild-life - a herd of deer and a flock of Canada Geese. We re-visited the big Jesus like statue holding the duck of peace and ran by the field of obelisks overlooked by a saint-like woman with a scythe - honestly, this cemetery has it all! I have it add it also has hills - plenty of them and steep. Perhaps next time we can forgo the run to the run and do a longer piece in the cemetery, there is so much to explore.

Sunday, August 17, 2008

Aug 24 Run: Allegheny Cemetery - Penn Ave entrance

Meet at the Penn Ave entrance of Allegheny Cemetery for a discovery run (that means we still don't really know where we are going) in this park-like historic cemetery. This entrance is just a few steps toward E. Liberty from the massive new Children's' Hospital.
For those who want to run to the run, meet at Wilkins and Shady at 6:30 AM (it is about 2.5 miles from there).

Today Roye did a formal repeat of the run to the "top of Pittsburgh" aka Robert E Williams Park. I wrote this the first time Roye took Wendy and I up there: "I do not have enough fresh adjectives to describe this view from the top of Pittsburgh - it is absolutely spectacular." And today was no exception - cool and a little misty, Pittsburgh looks its best spread out all around the rivers and green trees.

Paula TB kindly mapped this run. Check it out on MapMyRun

On our way up there, Jonathan spied what must be the only tomato plant on the grounds of the Cathedral of Learning (see if YOU can find it). On our way back we had to take a detour to avoid a very, large stray dog that Tom was sure he still saw when we were back on the ground at Phipps.

Aug17 Run: Phipps

Not sure who is leading but be at Phipps at 7 AM next Sunday and find out :-)

I did not run with the group this past Sunday as I was recovering from an evil stomach bug but I did join them for coffee. Everyone looked happy and sweaty so I am sure it was a good one. It was a chilly but pleasant morning to drink coffee and ponder why the Olympic beach volley ball outfits are so skimpy.

Aug 10 Run: Frick park gate on Reynolds near Frick Art Museum

The run this coming Sunday will start at the entrance to Frick Park at the intersection of Reynolds and South Homewood.

Paula C. had this to report about Sunday's run:
Very nice run this morning with multiple staircases and some interesting 'garden homes' along paths in Oakland. Equal gender representation...

Paula also asked that I pass the following along:

Hi Anne Jane,

My neighbor alerted me to the following Squirrel Hill community meeting that will take place Monday, August 4th at 7pm at the JCC. She is encouraging neighborhood residents to go because she fears that only the nay-sayers will show up, and she thinks that it is a worthwhile proposal with more positives than negatives for the Squirrel Hill business district.

Murray/Forward Development Community Meeting
7:00 p.m.
Levinson Hall
Jewish Community Center
5738 Forbes Avenue
SHUC is sponsoring a community informational meeting regarding the recently announced multi-use development project at the corner of Murray and Forward Avenues.

Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting so they can hear from the developers and their architect what is being proposed.

There will be a Q&A session following the meeting.

Then, because of my true calling as a data collector, and at the behest of my husband, I am compelled to report that the men outnumbered the women at the Friday morning run yesterday, 3:2. A quote from a recent running group participant who has been known to reproducibly call in drenching rainstorms for previously reliably dry running group runs: '…the husbands are taking over!' Ladies??
